In our peak television age, National Geographic hasn’t made much of an impact. It seems that they’re hoping to change that, however, with Genius, their first dramatic series starring Geoffrey Rush as none other than Albert Einstein. The anthology drama follows the world’s greatest innovators one season at a time, and viewers can now get a glimpse at what season 1 holds in store with the show’s newest trailer.
Adapted from Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography Einstein: His Life and Universe, along with some of Einstein’s personal letters, Genius hopes to become what Mad Men was for AMC and what House of Cards became for Netflix. It’s a high-profile new dramatic series and the network certainly isn’t slouching, even bringing in Ron Howard to direct the pilot. Go big or go home, right?
The new trailer is brief and not-very-revealing, but it does promise something bold and distinctive, at the very least. With the cast that’s attached, we hope that National Geographic can deliver when Genius premieres sometime this April. Beyond the obvious song choice in The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind,” there’s a lot to like about the show and Rush does, admittedly, look a lot like the genius-in-question. Hopefully the Oscar winner brings new life to the inventor.
Geoffrey Rush will share the role of Einstein alongside Johnny Flynn, who’ll play the younger version of the iconic historic figure. Emily Watson, Nicholas Rowe and Samantha Colley, meanwhile, fill out the supporting cast.
