When Bryan Singer’s latest X-Men flick, Apocalypse, didn’t do very well at the box office, many speculated that it might be the last we see of the actors that boarded the franchise as younger versions of the team in X-Men: First Class. Sure enough, Michael Fassbender didn’t sound very confident that he’d return as Magneto in a recent interview, and Jennifer Lawrence strongly insinuated that she wouldn’t play Mystique again – however, James McAvoy sings a slightly different tune.
Fandango caught up with the Scottish actor during the press tour for his new movie Split, and when asked about a possible return to the X-franchise, he definitely gave a more positive response than his castmates.
If they offer me a really good part, I’ll be in. If it’s not a really good part, I’ll be like ‘Eh, I’ll think about it.’ But I’ve always loved playing Charles and I’ve always had pretty interesting things to do as Charles, so if that continues, then yeah, of course I’d love to take part.
Reports indicate that Fox’s X-Men franchise is in a state of flux at the moment, so we’re still not certain that there are even plans to bring this particular team back together again. We do know that Josh Boone’s New Mutants is in the works and McAvoy is rumored to be playing Xavier in the film, so perhaps that’s why he seems a bit more sure about reprising his role than Fassbender and Lawrence do.
