Paramount has simultaneously dated a third Cloverfield movie for October 27, 2017 and removed God Particle from its release date, but are they one and the same? It certainly seems that way.

Headed up by director Julius Onah, the now-untitled God Particle was originally slated for February 24. J.J. Abrams remains attached to produce, and the fact that both Abrams and his Bad Robot production company were involved early on led many to assume that Onah’s thriller has been masquerading as Cloverfield 3 all this time.

Adding fuel to that fire, Paramount has today pulled God Particle from its schedule, and though it’s not strictly speaking a conventional announcement – in a loosely connected universe dominated by colossal sea monsters and spaceships, conventional wisdom tends to go out the window – it appears the studio will slap a new title on God Particle before October and release it as the third movie following Cloverfield and this year’s rather excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Beyond that, what we do know is that the pic previously known as God Particle has so far assembled David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd for a story that involves a physics experiment gone awry. While on board an American space station, Onah’s crew bear witness to a large hadron accelerator malfunctioning quite spectacularly, causing the Earth to “vanish” before their very eyes.

God Particle Cloverfield 3 is now expected to stomp into IMAX theaters on October 27, 2017. A pre-Halloween corridor leads us to believe that Julius Onah is rustling up a more horror-themed entry into Paramount’s loosely connected universe, but that’s just conjecture for now.
