Night Dive Studios’ painstaking remake of 90s RPG classic System Shock has hit a few road bumps during development, a recent update on the project’s Kickstarter page has seemingly revealed. While no explicit mention of a delay is made in the bite-sized Q&A session, one question asks what platforms the remake will see a release on, with the answer reading “Our goal is to launch on PC/Mac/Linux/Xbox One/PS4 by Q2 of 2018.”
When the crowdfunding campaign launched earlier this year, the estimated release date given was December 2017, so the delay isn’t too bad. Having comfortably reached (and surpassed) its $900,000 funding goal within a month of going live, Night Dive has since released all sorts of in-progress updates, including an early demo to coincide with the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign itself.
To soften the blow of the delay, Night Dive has dispatched a new piece of concept art, which you can see below. There’s no denying that the art team have nailed the aesthetic and atmosphere of the original 1994 release.
The System Shock remake hits all major platforms in early 2018 then, but there’s no guarantee that it’ll be a simultaneous one. Night Dive says that it’s “not sure if it will be a simultaneous launch, but we’ll do our best.”
For those that missed it the first time around, System Shock takes place in 2072 aboard the Citadel, a space station that has been commandeered by the malevolent SHODAN, an artificial intelligence that has proceeded to either kill, mutate or mechanize the station’s unfortunate population. As you’d expect, your presence on the derelict installation isn’t exactly welcome.
A sequel to the original – System Shock 2 – was released in 1999 by Irrational Games. Due to Ken Levine’s involvement in both, the BioShock games are often considered to be spiritual predecessors to the former, with both sharing several similar themes.
