If you’re a big fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead, chances are you still haven’t fully recovered from that devastating season 7 premiere on Sunday night – but there is a little detail that most people seem to have missed that will either make you feel a bit better about one of the deaths, or perhaps even a bit worse.
You may have noticed Abraham and Sasha flashing peace signs to one another on a few different occasions throughout season 6 while they were still in that “will they, won’t they” phase of their relationship, and it turns out the late Sergeant Ford made a similar gesture to his new lover right before Negan’s bat made contact with his head.
It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that I and many other viewers never caught, but producer Greg Nicotero and the actor that played Abraham, Michael Cudlitz, pointed it out during an interview with Vanity Fair.
“That was something that Michael added, and it was a beautiful little moment,” Nicotero said. “That little peace sign was to her.” “It was sort of this unspoken, very loaded peace sign,” added Cudlitz. “We had to find a way for Abraham to connect with Sasha—for him to say good-bye specifically to Sasha.”
Does this small moment of tenderness amid the brutality somehow make Abraham’s death more poignant, or does it just add to the misery of the whole situation? Drop us a comment below and let us know how you feel.
The Walking Dead returns this Sunday for its second season 7 episode, “The Well.”
