Thanks in part to the timely, downright terrifying demo, Capcom’s unveiling of Resident Evil 7 was one of the big takeaways at E3 back in June.
On the surface, it’s a franchise overhaul that had been long in the cards – one that’s seemingly too scary for even the employees at Capcom – though today brings forth the nerve-shredding Gamescom trailer with some all-new story details to boot.
As Capcom previously revealed, the Beginning Hour demo won’t feature in the core game when it launches in January; instead, Resident Evil 7 picks up in the heart of Louisiana where something’s amiss. While those who persevered through the vertical slice became familiar with the “Sewer Gators” film crew, RE7 introduces new characters in Marguerite and a strange tape called “Mia.” But what horrors does it contain?
Resident Evil 7 biohazard takes place in Dulvey, Louisiana, where something’s amiss. Nobody’s heard from Jack or Marguerite Baker in ages, with rumors flying about what may have happened to them. At the end of Beginning Hour, you see a tagline that reads “Meet the Family,” and in that demo, you get a glimpse at the supposedly missing Jack Baker.
While Beginning Hour acts as a setup for the main game, this time you’ll see a found footage videotape segment that will appear in the final game. (Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you, the videotape graphical effects are distinct to these segments and aren’t representative of the rest of the game.)
Resident Evil 7 will introduce a new era for Capcom’s horror flagship on January 24. It’ll launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and will also be playable from start to finish via Sony’s PlayStation VR.
