Three years (and change) on from its unveiling of the PlayStation 4 in the Big Apple, Sony has announced plans to host a new PlayStation event in New York on September 7, with all signs pointing to the platform-holder finally lifting the lid on the hardware upgrade currently known as PS4 Neo.

Due to take place in NYC’s PlayStation Theatre at 3PM ET, the official word from Sony is that the showcase will herald “details about the PlayStation business.” Considering that the PlayStation 4.5 is officially a thing – a thing that ultimately sat on the sidelines during E3 2016 – it seems safe to assume that the Japanese giant will take the opportunity to get the long-rumored mid-generational upgrade out in the open in time for Tokyo Game Show.

Perhaps most important of all, though, is the oncoming launch of PlayStation VR (October 13), particularly when you factor in the alleged processing boost that PS4 Neo brings. That technical jump will reportedly negate the need for the PSVR’s processing box, too, and the added horsepower is something that publishers like Electronic Arts are welcoming with open arms.

That being said, Sony’s Andrew House recently allayed fears that those who own the base PS4 will feel somewhat left behind.

“We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle,” House said. To reassure owners of the current console, he added, “All games will support the standard PS4, and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.”

Mark the calendars, folks. Sony will host its latest PlayStation-centric event on September 7 at 3PM ET.
