Telltale’s contribution to the point-and-click adventure genre can’t be overstated, but with the release of Batman: The Telltale Series next month, the developer is poised to shake up the formula. Spoilers: It involves multiplayer.
Entitled Crowd Play, Shack News reveals that said feature comes in two varieties, either allowing you, the hosting player, to follow the audience’s general consensus or, on the other hand, override the majority vote and blaze a path of your own.
Upon activating Crowd Play, players generate a URL where budding viewers can cast their votes. Those checking in on the action can also give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to express their approval or criticism of the player in control. It’s not multiplayer in the traditional sense, mind you, but it instils a social element into Telltale games which have, up until now, been viewed as solitary, single-player experiences.
Speaking at SDCC this past weekend, Telltale’s Head of Creative Communications Job Stauffer noted: “we wanted a better way to integrate that audience. Now, from two to 2,000-plus people can help the player make decisions. We are now turning all of Telltale’s games into a live interactive multiplayer experience.”
Crowd Play will be introduced alongside Batman: The Telltale Series. It’s on course to swoop onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac on August 2 with Realm of Shadows.
