Disney has announced plans to release Wreck-It Ralph 2 on March 9, 2018.
News comes by way of Facebook, where the House of Mouse posted the above teaser image, possibly suggesting that the animated sequel will take a crack at both the world of online gaming and the Internet itself – both Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) are seen towering over a digital hub of spoof nodes, including ‘Pictopedia’ and ‘Gügle.’
Both Reilly and Silverman are on board to reprise their respective roles, after helping guide the 2012 sleeper hit to $471 million at the global box office, not to mention an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature. After steering Zootopia into a box office phenomenon, helmer Rich Moore will return to co-direct Wreck-It Ralph 2 alongside Phil Johnston, who helped pen the script for the original movie opposite Jennifer Lee of Frozen fame.
Plot details are practically non-existent at this stage, but given the sharp, intelligent nature of Moore’s first film, we expect plenty of DLC gags and nods to the pixelated world of video games. Speaking of which, will Disney get the rights to lease iconic video game characters such as Mario and Sonic for the 2018 sequel? Time will tell.
It’s official: Wreck-It Ralph 2 will stomp into theaters on March 9, 2018.
