Despite cancelling the sequel formerly known as Prey 2 more than two years ago, Dishonored dev Arkane Studios took to the stage at Bethesda’s E3 showcase yesterday evening to unveil a “completely reworked” version of Prey, which shouldn’t be considered a remake or sequel.
That’s according to Game Director Raphael Colantonio, who instead pitched the 2017 release as a “reimagining of the IP.” Allowing players to choose between a male and female protagonist, Prey is rooted in the year 2032, and the official word from Bethesda’s blog outlines the passion driving the overhauled project at Arkane.
At Arkane [Studios], our passion for creating unique worlds where you can improvise, experiment and play your way has driven our vision for Prey. We’re excited to show you more of the sci-fi world we’re creating at QuakeCon this summer.
In terms of the story underpinning Prey, here’s a synopsis per Bethesda:
You are Morgan Yu, the subject of morally dubious experiments designed to improve the human race. You awaken aboard the Talos 1 in the year 2032 and must uncover the secrets hiding in the depths of the space station while being hunted by the mysterious alien force that has taken over. You’ll have to rely on the tools you find on the station – along with your wits, weapons and mind-bending abilities – to combat the growing threat and, hopefully, survive.
Prey is pegged for a 2017 release across PS4, Xbox One and PC. Next up for Arkane Studios is Dishonored 2, which will welcome Emily Kaldwin to the fray on November 11.
