Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are off to the ’70s in the latest and wonderfully retro trailer for Shane Black’s crime noir, The Nice Guys.
Edited and scored to resemble the film’s period setting, today’s snippet is arguably the best yet, as Gosling and Crowe’s bumbling detectives look to solve a case on the neon-lit streets of ’70s Los Angeles. The former plays Holland March, a down-on-his-luck private eye that is struggling to make ends meet, let alone solve cases, but stumbles upon a shot at the big time upon meeting Jackson Healy, Crowe’s all brawn, no brains muscle-for-hire.
It’s a dynamic that allows for some truly entertaining exchanges between the film’s leading duo, and recent featurettes for The Nice Guys have highlighted that piping hot chemistry in brilliant fashion.
Blending elements of crime noir with comedic beats that wouldn’t look out of place in a buddy cop movie, Black is deliberately drawing from his directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, of which he considers a key inspiration fuelling The Nice Guys. And so, once Healy and March are on the same side, they journey into LA’s criminal underbelly “to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.” Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and Kim Basinger are also among those who star.
Shane Black’s bickering detectives will sport the sharpest suits and slickest hairstyles when The Nice Guys opens in theaters on May 20.
