Bryan Singer is currently putting the finishing touches on X-Men: Apocalypse, and once the press tour for the movie wraps up, the filmmaker will be moving on to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. What that means for the X-Men franchise is unclear; will Fox wait for him to return before picking up a story, or will someone else be brought in to take the reigns?
Those are hopefully questions which will be answered in the coming weeks and months, but it sounds like Singer has already decided on the direction he’ll take the next instalment in.
As you can see in the video above (around the 20:00 mark), a new rumour has emerged which points to the X-Men: Apocalypse follow-up being an adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga. It may seem a little too soon to take Jean Grey down that route, but both Singer and writer/producer Simon Kinberg have expressed their interest in redoing that story a number of times in the past, especially after it was handled pretty appallingly in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand.
As the current X-Men adventures take place in a new timeline, Singer could obviously take things in a very different direction, and the prospect of The Dark Phoenix Saga being done right (with at least some of the action taking place in outer space) is definitely something that we could get on board with.
What do you think, though? Would you like to see Singer head in this direction for the next X-Men movie? Let us know below.
