Or should that be, almost featured new Yoda scenes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens did? Either way, the mega block-busting return to the galaxy far, far away was going to include brand new content with the pint-sized Jedi master, as Frank Oz recorded dialogue that was ultimately never used.
As we know already, Yoda can be heard whispering some older dialogue during the flashback glimpses that occur when Rey grabs hold of Luke’s old lightsaber – but according to the film’s editor Maryann Brandon, that scene originally featured a brand new cameo for the well-loved character.
Here’s what she told Entertainment Tonight at the 66th annual ACE Eddie Awards:
There was one point where we were actually thinking of having Yoda in the film, and then we decided not to. Frank Oz came in for a day and did a whole bunch of Yoda and he was over the moon to do it — and we were tickled pink!
What exactly it would have entailed remains a mystery, but there’s a good chance Yoda appeared as a Force ghost to offer Rey some of his trademark sage advice. At any rate, hopefully the deleted scene is part of the extras on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray release so that we’ll get to find out for ourselves.
