Johnny Depp Signs On For Triple Frontier

It's been a rough couple of years for the once great Johnny Depp. After starring in several stinkers like Mortdecai, The Lone Ranger, The Tourist and Transcendence, many people wrote off the A-lister as being past his prime. Last year, however, saw a bit of a return to form for Depp with Black Mass, and now he's looking to keep that momentum going as we're hearing he's signed on for Triple Frontier.

It’s been a rough couple of years for the once great Johnny Depp. After starring in several stinkers like Mortdecai, The Lone RangerThe Tourist and Transcendence, many people wrote off the A-lister as being past his prime. Last year, however, saw a bit of a return to form for Depp with Black Mass, and now he’s looking to keep that momentum going as we’re hearing he’s signed on for Triple Frontier.

The project has been floating around Hollywood for a while now, with Kathryn Bigelow attached to direct for a very long time. Back then, Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, Will Smith, Christian Bale and more of the industry’s finest were all linked to roles. Eventually, Bigelow left and A Most Violent Year director J.C. Chandor replaced her. While Hanks is still said to be interested, Depp is the first one to come on board in an official capacity.

Penned by Mark Boal, the thriller is set in the “notorious, titular border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil called “la triple frontera,” where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge, making it a haven for crime that’s difficult to monitor.” No word yet on the role that Depp is in talks for, or on the one that Hanks is eyeing, but with some heavyweight actors now making their involvement public, you can bet that we’ll be hearing more soon.

Triple Frontier is currently without a start date, but we imagine that the studio will lock down a cast shortly and at that point, cameras will get rolling.
