The nominations for the 88th Annual Academy Awards have just been announced, and as usual there are a few surprises that popped up. The Revenant strongly led the way with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Film Editing. Mad Max: Fury Road was not far behind with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing.

While these may seem like the strongest contenders, it’s worth noting that neither of them received a nomination for their screenplay, so as to whether these are truly the favorites remains to be seen. The Big Short and Spotlight didn’t receive nearly as many nominations, but they did hit every major category, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay (in their respective categories), Best Film Editing, and nods in the acting categories.

As far as snubs go this year, none was more shocking and downright embarrassing than seeing Steve Jobs left off the Adapted Screenplay list in favor of lesser scripts like The Big Short and Brooklyn. Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay is a powerhouse of dialogue, creating intimate duets between the characters that are truly unforgettable, resulting in one of the very best screenplays of the year, so to see the Academy leave it off in favor of something like a banking manual is rather shameful.

Speaking of screenplay snubs, Quentin Tarantino’s excellent screenplay for The Hateful Eight was also left off, apparently in favor of Straight Outta Compton. Now, Straight Outta Compton was a fine film, but the writing was nowhere near as memorable as The Hateful Eight, so this is a rather perplexing switch. It’s especially strange given the fact that Tarantino’s screenplay has been nominated practically everywhere, including the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and BAFTA (the WGA doesn’t count as it was deemed “ineligible” due to their ridiculous rules), while Straight Outta Compton‘s script has been nominated nowhere of note except the WGA, likely only earning the spot due to the exclusion of The Hateful Eight, Inside Out, and Ex Machina. We’ll just have to chalk this up to being one of the Academy’s really bizarre choices.

Another notable snub this morning is Sir Ridley Scott for The Martian, who was booted in favor of Lenny Abrahamson for Room. It’s even more surprising given the fact that they really seemed to like The Martian, giving it seven nominations that include Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Though to be fair, they did nominate Room for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, so it must’ve been pretty close. In all honesty though, McCarthy and McKay could have easily been given the boot to make room, instead of losing a superior nominee like Scott.

As for surprise inclusions, I can’t really say that anything here surprises me in particular. I didn’t think Jennifer Lawrence would get in for Best Actress, but it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility.

Enough out of me, though. Now it’s your turn. Tell us, are there any big snubs that upset you? Anything that you were surprised to see make it in? Let us know in the comments!

The winners will be announced at the annual ceremony on February 28th, so be sure to join us then for a live-blogging at that time and also be sure to join us this Sunday for the Critics Choice awards.
