On its journey to global box office dominance, J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens has taken aim at one of the all-time heaviest hitters of international cinema, and sunk it. The return to the galaxy far, far away has now accumulated £83.5M ($123.8M) after just 13 days of release, making it the 4th highest grossing movie in UK history, blowing the mighty Titanic out of the water.
Not only that, but it did it in record time, becoming the fastest film to ever make it to £80M, beating Skyfall’s previous 23 day record. Oh, and you can add an IMAX sales record (£8.2M) previously held by Spectre while you’re at it. Bond will not be pleased.
The world is waiting to see if the force is strong enough with Abrams’ picture to beat James Cameron’s Avatar to become the highest grossing movie of all time. There’s no doubt it’s on the right track – but as of right now, it sits in 9th position, globally.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently showing in theaters worldwide.
