Kristen Wiig And Zach Galifianakis Crime Caper Masterminds Secures September 2016 Release

In the fallout of Relativity Media's bankruptcy, major question marks loomed over several high-profile productions, including beleaguered Western Jane Got a Gun and upcoming Kristen Wiig comedy Masterminds. Originally penciled for a release back in August, it is the latter feature that was left languishing in post-production, though Relativity has allayed fears that Jared Hess' (Napoleon Dynamite) crime caper would never see the light of day, after locking down the film for a release on September 30, 2016.

In the fallout of Relativity Media’s bankruptcy, major question marks loomed over several high-profile productions, including beleaguered Western Jane Got a Gun and upcoming Kristen Wiig comedy Masterminds. Originally penciled for a release back in August, it is the latter feature that was left languishing in post-production, though Relativity has allayed fears that Jared Hess’ (Napoleon Dynamite) crime caper would never see the light of day, after locking down the film for a release on September 30, 2016.

That’s more than a year after the initial release date set for Masterminds, though at least we have official confirmation of that Hess’ latest comedy is back on track. Of course, with such a starry ensemble, it was highly unlikely that the feature would be left out in the cold, having assembled Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis and Owen Wilson for the riotous comedy.

Alongside today’s news, Relatively also pegged down release dates for a slew of projects incubating in post, including The Disappointments Room (March 25), horror flick Before I Wake (April 8), Kidnap (May 13), and The Strangers (December 2).

As for Masterminds, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Ken Marino and Devin Ratray complete the cast of Jared Hess’ comedy, which is now on course to finally – finally – get a theaterical release on September 30, 2016.

In this action comedy inspired by true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight.

The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime. Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurdly faulted heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash…only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and has been set up to take the fall. With the bandits blowing the millions on lavish and ridiculous luxuries, they leave behind a glaring trail of evidence. Now on the lam and in over his head, David must dodge the authorities, evade a hilarious hit man, Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis), and try to turn the tables on the ones he trusted most.
