Dracula Untold writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been hard at work on a remake of the 1960s sci-fi series Lost in Space for a while now, and today, we have the first concrete update on the project in over a year.
Deadline is reporting that the show has been snatched up by Netflix with a straight-to-series order. Furthermore, The Descent helmer Neil Marshall will get behind the camera for the first episode and is also set to executive produce.
In terms of plot, the remake will hew close to the original, and will follow “a young explorer family (and presumably a stowaway) from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds.” The only real difference in this remake is that it will be a bit more grounded than the original series was, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, the goofiness of Lost in Space worked fine in the 60s, but wouldn’t exactly translate too smoothly into today’s day and age.
Of course, this is far from the first attempt to revive the property, with a film adaptation in 1998 failing to inspire much excitement. With Netflix behind this new reboot though, I’m sure it will fare a lot better. The core concept of the series definitely has potential, and with someone like Marshall on board to lend a gritty realism to the project, it will certainly be interesting to see how it all turns out.
