FX is primed to tap into its dark and putrid well for another installment of American Horror Story, after the network today confirmed the show will return for a season 6 – but where will it be set?
From an asylum to a fully-fledged carnival, AHS has defined itself on the anthology format, switching environments, settings and characters with each passing season. And currently, the Ryan Murphy-Brad Falchuk gothic horror series is situated in a hotel run by Lady Gaga’s wonderfully over-the-top owner, The Countess.
Looking at the broader picture, FX believes today’s renewal ensures that American Horror Story joins TV’s pantheon as a truly landmark series.
“With the sixth installment coming next year, American Horror Story has unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf in announcing the news Tuesday. “From Murder House to Hotel, AHS has pioneered a new television form as well becoming FX’s highest rated show — while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity.”
Before Hotel premiered back in October, co-creator Ryan Murphy touched base on the possibility of one day welcoming back fan-favorite Jessica Lange, thus splitting the narrative across two separate seasons across 2016. Ambitious though that may be, there’s been nary a mention of the proposed idea since Murphy first pitched it, and it’s difficult to imagine that the creative team would be able to lock down the likes of Gaga, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters and the leading players for such an extensive period of time.
After all, AH is a series that prides itself on its ability to adapt after the passing of each season, with FX “challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining.” With that in mind, color us intrigued about season 6 and its nebulous theme.
Currently in the thick of its fifth outing on the airwaves, FX’s American Horror Story will wrap up its spell in the Hotel before the year’s end, before returning in 2016 with an entirely new and horrific palette to enjoy.
