Al Pacino is currently in talks to play the lead role in Fogelman’s directorial debut. Pacino will play an aging rocker who wants to fix his messed up life after a 40-year-old letter from his idol, John Lennon, shows up in his mailbox.

This news comes after Carell dropped out from playing Pacino’s alienated son because of a conflict with his schedule.

Pacino hasn’t had much success on the big screen in the past few years. His last few films include 88 Minutes and Righteous Kill, both of which were critical and financial flops. He did receive high praise and multiple for his role as Jack Kevorkian in the HBO TV-movie You Don’t Know Jack.

Pacino is currently working on several other projects, including a new adaptation of King Lear, in which he plays the title role and Barry Levinson’s Gotti: Three Generations, in which he plays mobster Aniello Dellacroce.
