Late last week, developer Frictional Games revealed that its blood-curdling horror title SOMA was nearing completion, and now the studio has published a new video that explores the unsettling sound design echoing around the dank corridors of Pathos-2, the underwater research facility housing this most mysterious of horror games.
Part Dead Space, part BioShock, the first-person title unfolds deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean where a scientific experiment has evidently gone awry. Infused with the stylistic tendencies of a H.P. Lovecraft tale, Frictional’s existential horror will have players encounter strange sentient robots, and some of the eerie screeching showcased in the video above is but a taster of what to expect in little under a month’s time.
As we alluded to earlier, the developer is now on the final stretch of development, with SOMA all but complete. In a statement released via Frictional’s Facebook page, here’s what the creative team had to share:
In the final weeks leading up to release, you want to make sure that you only fix issues and not cause new ones.
Because of this, work has been extra gruelling the last few weeks as everyone wants to add their final stuff before we reach the point when this is impossible. Things are looking really good though, and we should basically have every single bit of content in the game by now. This means that next week will act more as a buffer zone in case something unexpected shows up, instead of a frantic race against time.
SOMA will take players into the depths of the ice-cold Atlantic Ocean when Frictional Games’ horror title arrives on PlayStation 4 and PC on September 22.
