Bryan Singer is at it again. Ever since cameras began rolling on X-Men: Apocalypse, the director’s Instagram feed has been a hub of activity for the superhero threequel, with behind-the-scenes photos and official teases cropping up every other week. Not only did we catch the first glimpse of the younger mutants via Singer’s account, but the filmmaker also shared raw shots of the film’s Cairo set, which is said to host Oscar Isaac’s titular antagonist.
Fast forward to today and we have the arrival of a pair of new set photos that may not offer much, but they’re still exciting teases nonetheless. The first of which is taken from behind two on-set monitors and appears to tease some form of caged brawling arena, whereas the second – which Singer captioned with “Reminds me of #area51” – showcases a trio of uniforms or disguises housed in a retro-futuristic display.
[zerg]If anything, these new images only offer up further evidence of Singer’s push for practical effects – heck, the director and his production team have even created a towering Anubis statue – the Egyptian god of the afterlife – along with other sets to drive home the film’s grand, mythic aura.
Cut straight from the old testament, the movie sees Apocalypse rise from a 5,000 year slumber only to seek the ruination of man and mutant alike. Aided by the Four Horsemen – Psylocke, Angel, Storm and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto – Isaac’s megalomaniac sets out on a mission to cleanse the four corner of the Earth, and that’s where the X-Men come in.
Spearheaded by James McAvoy’s Professor X, Singer’s Apocalypse is poised to bring together one of – if not the – biggest ensemble in the franchise’s history, with Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Lana Condor (Jubilee), and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) joining the cast as the more younger mutants.
Oscar Isaac’s villain will bring biblical destruction to mutant and humankind alike when Bryan Singer’ X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
