When conductor Arnie Roth uttered the word “remake” when discussing Final Fantasy XII over the weekend, fans of the PS2 RPG couldn’t help but get excited.

The comment was made during the Final Fantasy Distant Worlds concert held in Pittsburgh, fuelling speculation that Square would overhaul the sequel in the vein of Final Fantasy VII. However, taking to the official Facebook page (via Eurogamer), Roth has clarified that the term was “used in error,” though he didn’t necessarily rule out a potential HD remaster.

Dear friends,

In response to comments posted by fans, I want to rectify a statement made from the stage Saturday night at our Distant Worlds: music from Final Fantasy concert in Pittsburgh.

Following conversations with composer Hitoshi Sakimoto regarding new concert arrangements of music from Final Fantasy 12, regrettably, the term “remake” was used in error during one of the announcements that took place from the stage during the concert.

We sincerely regret any confusion this has caused.

Alas, it appears as though Roth simply mixed up his terminology, as it’s likely that Square – buoyed by the success of Final Fantasy X & X-2 HD – will give FFXII a new lick of paint on current-gen consoles. As a matter of fact, the publisher teased that the title could be in line for the HD treatment two years ago, and that it’s ultimately dependent on audience demand.

Released during the PlayStation 2’s twilight years in 2006, Final Fantasy XII took place in the fictional land of Ivalice and introduced a lot of elements that have since become staples of the series – encountering enemies in the overworld, for instance.

Tell us, would you still like to see Square Enix push ahead with a Final Fantasy XII remaster a la X & X-2? Or would you rather the publisher push ahead with new entries in the RPG series? let us know below.
