Who could have guessed that The CW would become the new small-screen haven for superhero programming? Arrow has proven a thrilling watch through three increasingly ambitious seasons, The Flash arrived as one of the TV season’s most stunning surprises, and now the network is gearing up for its third DC Comics take with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Unlike Arrow and The FlashLegends of Tomorrow will be a real ensemble piece, pulling together supporting characters from those aforementioned series to form a new team of crime-fighting heroes. Brandon Routh’s The Atom, Caity Lotz’s White Canary, Dominic Purcell’s Heat Wave and Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold are all in the mix for the show, which will be highlighted at Comic-Con this year (hence the shiny new concept art, above).

The action for Legends of Tomorrow picks up as time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) recruits a group of super-powered individuals with the lofty goal of protecting the time stream from the villainous Val Savage, an immortal warrior bent on destruction.

Showrunner Phil Klemmer recently spoke with EW about the series, explaining that though Savage is the main antagonist in this first season, the heroes will also have their work cut out for them cleaning up their own messes:

“They’re screw-ups. Instead of tiptoeing through history, they’re plodding through it, leaving their footprints and fingerprints and constantly having to wonder whether they’re going to screw the future up rather than fix it… It’s going to be total madness.”

It’s going to be incredibly interesting to see how Legends of Tomorrow attempts to utilize the ensemble structure, something that ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was still struggling to figure out at the end of its second season. More coverage of the series will certainly come out of this year’s Comic-Con, and viewers can expect to see the series land on The CW sometime this fall.
