As one of Sony’s flagship and indeed best-selling franchises, Gran Turismo 7 has been conspicuously absent from the PlayStation 4’s roster hitherto. It was a gap that the Japanese company tried – and failed – to fill with DriveClub, but there remains a tangible, GT-shaped hole in the console’s software library.
According to series creator Kazunori Yamauchi, fans of the racing series “will not have to wait that long” for the next installment, leading us to believe that developer Polyphony Digital is gearing up for an announcement during Sony’s E3 presser.
News comes by way of Yamauchi’s appearance at the recent Peugeot event in Paris, where the esteemed developer noted that the healthy relationship between the manufacturer and Gran Turismo is set to continue. When quizzed by Spazio Games about the next entry in the franchise, Yamauchi offered up a frank assessment about GT‘s notoriously slow turnaround, and why the creative team at Polyphony can’t afford to wait much longer before pulling back the tarpaulin.
“People will not wait forever so much,” and then he added: “We are talking about Gran Turismo, we will not have to wait that long”
All signs currently point to the developer finally showcasing Gran Turismo 7 at E3, before slating the simulator for a release in 2016. This is merely conjecture of course, but it could well be the case that development on the sequel has been held up by Project Morpheus, and it’s almost inevitable that Sony will try to integrate some form of functionality for the VR headset into the racer itself. Whether that pans out remains to be seen, but if there was ever a genre best suited to virtual reality, it’s the cockpit racer.
