Yesterday, Marvel threw moviegoers a curveball with the surprise announcement that The Hobbit trilogy and Fargo star Martin Freeman has been cast in Captain America: Civil War. Details on his role were unfortunately undisclosed, but thanks to the scoop-seekers at Latino Review, we may now have an answer.

The site issued a report today saying that Freeman will be playing an interrogator in the film, and that his role will extend to Black Panther in 2018. They also note that their “informed speculation” shows that Freeman’s character will be based on Everett Ross, an agent of the United States government assigned to Wakanda – home of Black Panther and the MCU’s vibranium mines – to become an expert on the African country. Seeing as Black Panther will make his big screen debut in Civil War, that makes a lot of sense.

What this also could also mean is that Freeman will become the new Agent Coulson, acting as a sort of glue between new entries in the Marvel universe – which thankfully leaves the door open for a run-in with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, an opportunity that Sherlock and The Desolation of Smaug fans hope Marvel doesn’t pass up.

Of course, until we get official confirmation on Freeman’s role, we’ll file this away in the rumor category. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on this new report in the comments below.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters exactly one year from today, on May 6, 2016.
