It’s been 15 years since Paramount’s farcical supermodel comedy chronicling the story of Derek Zoolander hit our screens. During that time, the spoofy feature has become something of a cult phenomenon, the existence of which has prompted a sequel. In these early stages, it’s going by the straightforward title Zoolander 2, and during its development has collected an impressive roster of returning stars. Now, thanks to an interview with EW, original cast member Christine Taylor has confirmed that she’s now joined that list:
“I can tell you that I’m involved,” she says, “but that’s all I can say. I can tell you it’s happening, but I can’t tell you where Matilda’s at and where their relationship is at. It’s all top secret!”
For the goofy supermodel’s original outing, Taylor played his main love interest journalist Matilda Jeffries. Embodying the typical ‘opposites attract’ couple – she hates models, he loves being one – by the end of the movie they cast aside their differences, fall in love and pop out Derek Jr. Wherever will their love story take them next?
Based on an update offered by Zoolander himself, Ben Stiller, the follow-up is expected to begin ten years after the events of the first movie. As that set of story details landed four years ago, it’s likely that the current script penned by Justin Theroux might have changed considerably.
Regardless of the plot, the key component required for another successful Zoolander flick is the selection of an exceptional cast. Along with Taylor and Stiller, we’ll also be treated to more flamboyant antics from Owen Wilson’s Hansel and Will Ferrell’s deranged designer, Mugatu. The ensemble has expanded this time around to include newbie, Penelope Cruz, who signed on to star opposite Stiller in an unknown role. A rival model, perhaps?
Directed by Ben Stiller, Zoolander 2 will go into production some time this year.
