Kanye West fans are eagerly anticipating the acclaimed rapper’s follow-up to Yeezus, which is expected to drop next year, but as an unannounced New Years’ Eve gift for his listeners, West released a new track, titled “Only One,” shortly before the 2015 ball dropped.
A soft and sentimental love song for his daughter North, “Only One” finds West teaming up with former Beatle Paul McCartney and singing sweet lyrics like “Hello, my only one, just like the morning sun, you’ll keep on rising till the sky knows your name” over tranquil piano chords. It’s certainly a different side to the rapper than listeners heard on the dark, often animalistic Yeezus.
“Only One,” which is available on iTunes, has been announced as the first single from West’s upcoming, still untitled album. It’s also the first of multiple collaborations with McCartney.
Since Yeezus, we haven’t heard much from West, though a new track called “God Level” was used in an Adidas commercial last May, and an unfinished, unofficial version of “All Day” leaked onto the Internet in August. Hopefully the unveiling of “Only One” means that we can expect to hear a lot more new material from the prolific musician before long.
Tell us, what do you think of this calmer Kanye West? “Only One” is certainly a surprising sound for him, but is it a fitting one? Let us know below.
