Grand Theft Auto V Becomes The Best-Selling Game In UK History Following Re-Release

In all likelihood, the 47th week of 2014 will go down as one of the busiest of the year for the video game industry. With the release of Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Grand Theft Auto V (which arrived on Xbox One and PlayStation 4), we were left with an embarrassment of riches. But according to figures published by Chart-Track, it was the latter title that stole the hearts and minds of gamers, after Rockstar's monumental title became the UK's best-selling game of all time.

But according to figures published by Chart-Track, it was the latter title that stole the hearts and minds of gamers, after Rockstar’s monumental title became the UK’s best-selling game of all time.

Here’s the official top ten for this week, courtesy of UKie:

1) Grand Theft Auto V
2) Far Cry 4
3) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
4) FIFA 15
5) Dragon Age: Inquisition
6) Assassin’s Creed Unity
7) WWE 2K15
8) Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham
9) Minecraft: PlayStation Edition
10) Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Such a feat pushed Grand Theft Auto V beyond the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops, and now positions the studio’s magnum opus as not only the highest grossing title in the country, but also the UK’s top-selling game in history.

That said, GTA V wasn’t the only new kid on the block this week, as Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 made an impressive debut into second place, with numbers confirming that the Himalayan adventure had the biggest launch of the open-world series to date. Below this new-fangled pair were chart stalwarts Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare — which, incidentally, was last week’s number one — and FIFA 15 at third and fourth, respectively.

BioWare’s much-anticipated Dragon Age: Inquisition made its bow in fifth, and it’s understood that latest entry in the franchise sold in and around the same ballpark asĀ Dragon Age II back in 2011. This week’s standings were rounded out by WWE 2K15 — which jumped six places thanks to its arrival on new consoles — Lego Batman 3, Minecraft: PlayStation Edition and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Elsewhere, it was an abysmal week for SEGA mascot Sonic, given that neither Sonic Boom for Wii U nor Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal charted in the top 40 at all.

Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum. Either way, you can check out our own verdict of Grand Theft Auto V‘s recent re-release in our in-depth review.
