First Clip For Jude Law’s Black Sea Is Brimming With Claustrophobic Paranoia

In essence, these films were a by product of the resonating paranoia left over from the Cold War, but that doesn't mean that the core framework -- one built to ensure maximum tension at the murky depths of the ocean -- couldn't be wrapped around a more modern tale, and that's exactly what Focus Features has done for its upcoming maritime adventure, Black Sea.

In hindsight, it’s been a long time since moviegoers have had a promising submarine film to look forward to. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, it seemed as though Hollywood studios took a shine to compressing a drama and/or thriller within a claustrophobic tin can at 800 feet, with the likes of The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide being the most notable examples.

Starring Jude Law as a rogue submarine captain, the film will follow him and his ragtag crew as they set out to the titular body of water in search of a missing nazi U-boat said to contain a lost treasure of untold riches. Directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play), Black Sea will bring together the likes of Scoot McNairy and Karl Davies for the journey, one which will see each member of the crew becoming increasingly unstable as they plunge ever further into the depths of the ocean.

Kevin MacDonald’s Black Sea will dive into theaters on January 23, 2015 in the States, and for more on the film, you can check out the official synopsis below.

“Black Sea” centres on a rogue submarine captain (Jude Law) who, after being laid off from a salvage company, pulls together a misfit crew to go after a sunken treasure rumoured to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea. As greed and desperation take control on board their claustrophobic vessel, the increasing uncertainty of the mission causes the men to turn on each other to fight for their own survival.
