Though it has already been overshadowed by The Lego Movie, Big Hero 6 and The Book of Life when it comes to Oscar buzz, Laika’s The Boxtrolls was one of the most weirdly entertaining moviegoing experiences of this fall. Impeccably animated and energetically executed, it suffered from a messy story but succeeded partly because its big, beating heart was undoubtedly in the right place.
And now, fans of the family adventure will be able to look forward to bringing it home – Universal and Focus Features have announced that they will be streeting the film via 2D and 3D Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo packs on January 20th, 2015.
No special features have been detailed as of yet, but the releases will be presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.
Check out the official plot summary below and let us know if you’ll be picking up The Boxtrolls next year.
A family event movie from the creators of “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.
