If you haven’t had quite enough duplicitous domesticity with Gone Girl, then you’ve not got long before Hollywood takes another stab. Rowan Joffe’s Before I Go To Sleep might not have the hype that preceded the aforementioned whodunnit, but it’ll likely still appeal to those who dig secrets and lies.
Based on the novel by S.J. Watson, Joffe has assembled quite the starry cast for this mystery adaptation. The film reunites The Railway Man co-stars Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth as a happily married couple. Or are they? Thing is, Kidman’s character suffers anterograde amnesia following a tragic accident, which means she’s unable to retain any memories of herself. Every morning she wakes and must piece together her past via journals that she’s presumably penned and photos she’s presumably snapped. Is her husband the loving, doting man he seems? And what of her doctor, played by Mark Strong? There’s plenty to be doubtful towards with unreliable memories, as Memento proved years ago.
The new trailer that’s landed today (courtesy of Yahoo! Movies) treads a dark and gloomy path for Kidman, who’s no idea who to trust and who to avoid. It’s a neat premise, albeit a not terribly original one. The novel’s a fun, pulpy page-turner that I enjoyed, but whether or not the movie can hide its central twist for long enough will likely dictate its success.
