According to Deadline, Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein has signed on to pen the script for The King Of Monsters’ next outing when it lands on June 8th, 2018.

Having just wrapped up work on a screenplay for Legendary’s other monstrous property, Skull Island, Borenstein is becoming a dependable resource for the studio. After all, though it was considered divisive by long-term fans of the alpha predator, Godzilla pulled in over $500 million at the international box office and even had a follow-up confirmed before the film roared into theatres.

Speaking of which, not much is known about the sequel at this time. During the company’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary revealed that Godzilla will go toe to toe with more rrecognizableenemies this time around, with the likes of Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah all teased to lumber out of Toho’s creative vaults.

Without doubt, this is exciting news for the fanbase, given that the main complaint levelled at this year’s release was that the titular monster was rather camera shy — in fact, Godzilla was only on screen for around 11 minutes in total. Granted, Gareth Edwards showcased a remarkable amount of restraint and it’s a testimony to his direction that the film never lost its sense of tension even while The King of Monsters went AWOL. So it’ll be fascinating to see how the director handles the sequel replete with the aforementioned big baddies.

With a release set for 2018, the Godzilla sequel is still a ways away — mainly due to the fact that Gareth Edwards is jetting off to a galaxy far, far away to director a Star Wars spin-off. Either way, we’ll have all the news about the Gojira’s next show-stopping outing as it appears.
