To coincide with the exciting news of the Deadpool movie’s early 2016 release date, 20th Century Fox shook up the status of two other upcoming high-profile projects as well. One is a routine and not-too-damning delay, while the other is a little more serious.
Let’s start with the bad news. The Michael Fassbender-produced adaptation of the popular Assassin’s Creed video game series has been completely stripped of a release date. While the film was scheduled to hit theaters on August 7th, 2015, it’s now been taken off of Fox’s slate. According to THR, the film simply wouldn’t have been ready in time. However, the fact that it completely lacks a new release date is definitely troubling.
Fox also took this opportunity to shift the release of Josh Trank’s reboot of the The Fantastic Four, which was slated for June 19th, 2015. The controversial superhero pic will now take Assassin’s Creed‘s old release date, and hit theaters at the tail-end of the summer movie season on August 7th, 2015.
What could this mean for either film? Well, Assassin’s Creed is likely stuck in the development stage at the moment. We haven’t heard much news about the project in a while, and despite Fassbender’s involvement as producer and star, no director was ever attached.
As for Fantastic Four, Fox could simply be trying to tap in on Marvel’s recent end-of-the-summer box office success of Guardians of the Galaxy, while giving Trank more time to work on post-production CGI and for any necessary re-shoots. Plus, this gives the studio a chance to remedy its mistake of leaving the titular superhero family out of San Diego Comic-Con this past year and bring fans some footage at SDCC next summer.
