After months of speculation, DC have finally unveiled the specifics of their cinematic universe and revealed the projected release dates of their upcoming films, but what’s really excited the fanbase is the casting revelations.
Many iconic comic book characters have been recast over the years, and while there may initially be some resistance from the fan community, these choices often work out for the best. People were skeptical that Heath Ledger could better Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker, but his is now the definitive version of the character. Other actors, like Andrew Garfield, Christian Bale and Henry Cavill, have all carved their own mark on internationally renowned heroes as well.
Despite this, the comic book community rose up in outrage when Ben Affleck was cast as Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Jesse Eisenberg didn’t fare much better either once it was announced that he would play the megalomaniac Lex Luthor.
DC isn’t the only one recasting their key players though. Some fans are also worried about rumblings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which suggest that the majority of their flagship characters may be recast soon once the actor’s contracts have expired, perhaps even as soon as 2018 when Avengers 3 is expected to be released.
While we’ll have to wait and see whether these future casting choices will succeed or not, let’s take a look back at five comic book characters who have been poorly recast.
