While the gaming industry has slipped into its annual summer slumber off of the back of E3 last month, there are still a few releases peppered across the calendar to keep everyone’s thumbs twitching. That said, according to UK retail analyst Chart-Track, Rebellion’s war-torn shooter, Sniper Elite 3, has held off the competition to claim the number one spot for a second consecutive week.
Here’s this week’s top ten listing in full:
1) Sniper Elite 3
2) Watch Dogs
3) FIFA 14
4) Titanfall
5) Wolfenstein: The New Order
6) Call of Duty: Ghosts
7) EA Sports UFC
8) 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
9) Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition
10) Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
Despite critics pointing to wonky AI and lacklustre visuals in the game, it seems Sniper Elite 3 has carved out its own niche since it launched a fortnight ago. In fact, given the game’s tendency to freeze and glitch, it’s no wonder that YouTube has been inundated with humorous clips of appalling frame rate and yes, even flying Nazis.
Other than that, it was the usual suspects rounding off this week’s standings, with Watch Dogs holding onto second place for the third week on the trot. Elsewhere, FIFA 14 and Titanfall took third and fourth, respectively, while Machine Games’ impressive WWII shooter, Wolfenstein: The New Order continues its pleasantly surprising streak at fifth.
In terms of handheld platforms, 3DS exclusive Tomadochi Life jumped five places and just missed out on an appearance in the top ten, with Nintendo’s quirky life simulator settling at 11th. And while the PlayStation Vita witnessed a healthy supply of new content in the form of the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy, MotoGP 14 and Ubisoft’s Child of Light, neither game made an impact on the all-formats chart.
Looking ahead to next week, though, it seems the only competition that Rebellion’s shooter will have to contend with is the next chapter in The Wolf Among Us, Cry Wolf. Of course, considering that Chart-Track doesn’t take digital sales into consideration, it looks to be that Sniper Elite 3 could well have its proverbial crosshairs on a third number one in seven days’ time.
