Today, we’ve learned that Sin City: A Dame to Kill For actress Rosario Dawson has joined the cast of Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil in a pivotal role, appearing in multiple episodes. The Hollywood Reporter expanded on the nature of Dawson’s character, telling us that she’ll play:

“A dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen brings blind attorney Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.”

Dawson joins Boardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox, who’s playing the titular antihero, and veteran character actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who’s playing The Kingpin (aka crime boss Wilson Fisk) in the series. Netflix will premiere all 13 episodes of Daredevil next year.

Based on the description above, it sounds like viewers shouldn’t get too attached to Dawson’s currently unnamed character. Daredevil is a much darker hero than most that are currently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his love interests have an unfortunate habit of dying in violent ways at the hands of his foes. Plus, Dawson is a major film star, and I doubt she’d join a superhero television series if it meant she’d have to stick around for multiple seasons.

Though Drew Goddard was originally on board as the showrunner for this series, the first of multiple collaborations between Netflix and Marvel, he departed to helm Sony’s Sinister Six movie. Shortly after, it was announced that Steven S. DeKnight, previously the showrunner on Starz’s Spartacus: Blood and SandSpartacus: Vengeance and Spartacus: War of the Damnedwould be taking over the reins.

Daredevil will be followed by 13-episode series charting the origins of Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, all of which lead into a team-up miniseries titled The Defenders.
