Surrounded by big, shiny robots, time-travelling mutants, animated dragons and Tom Cruise at his very best is Sony’s 22 Jump Street, a sequel to their smash hit comedy from 2012. A reboot of the 1980’s television show that first put Johnny Depp on the map, 21 Jump Street proved that Channing Tatum could be funny, Phil Lord and Chris Miller could direct live-action and that sometimes, a film can come out of nowhere and blow everyone away.
To say that expectations are high for the sequel would be an understatement. Sony is positioning it as the comedy of the summer, and with all of the talent from the first outing returning, 22 Jump Street just might walk away as the funniest film of 2014. And if not, you can be damn sure that it will be right up there.
Reprising their roles as Jenko and Schmidt, respectively, are Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Though the plot is identical to the first film (infiltrate the dealers, find the suppliers), this time around, the two undercover cops are being sent to college, which presents a whole host of new problems. And it won’t only be the drug ring that they have to contend with, as Jenko and Schmidt find their friendship being put to the test as the pressures of fitting in and being popular come into play.
Recently, during the film’s NYC press day, we had the chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with Lord, Miller, Tatum and Hill. Among other things, they discussed the challenges of making a comedy sequel, how Hill and Tatum’s real life friendship helped them with their roles, why Miller and Lord make such a good team, and much more.
Check it out below and be sure to catch 22 Jump Street when it hits theatres this Friday!
