Robert Pattinson May Be In Line For Indiana Jones

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm and co. a while back, Star Wars was the focus, with J.J. Abrams overseeing a seventh installment of the classic series that's due to hit theaters next December. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are set to star, alongside a strong cast of fresh faces for the franchise. Though the Star Wars news is undoubtedly exciting, where does that leave Lucasfilm's other enduring franchise: Indiana Jones? If recent rumors are to be believed, Disney is interested in rebooting the classic adventurer for a new set of films - with The Rover star Robert Pattinson inheriting the whip from Harrison Ford.

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm and co. a while back, Star Wars was the focus, with J.J. Abrams overseeing a seventh installment of the classic series that’s due to hit theaters next December. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are set to star, alongside a strong cast of fresh faces for the franchise. Though the Star Wars news is undoubtedly exciting, where does that leave Lucasfilm’s other enduring franchise: Indiana Jones? If recent rumors are to be believed, Disney is interested in rebooting the classic adventurer for a new set of films – with The Rover star Robert Pattinson inheriting the whip from Harrison Ford.

I’ll impress the fact that this is just a rumor to avoid getting mobbed by angry fans of the popular series. The last time we heard anything about a potential Indiana Jones reboot, Bradley Cooper was the actor in the mix. So by no means is the rumor that Pattinson’s name has ended up being passed around over at the House of Mouse necessarily anything more than just that: a rumor.

Regardless of who ends up playing the whip-cracking, fedora-wearing adventurer, it’s obvious that we’ll be getting more Indiana Jones before long. The franchise is just too valuable for Disney to let it die – the real question is, will someone get a fifth film moving before Harrison Ford has aged out of the part. Keep in mind he was looking a little raggedy back in 2008, when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hit theaters – and six years later, I doubt he’s now as capable of playing the physically taxing part as he was back then. Still, the factor that really sunk Crystal Skull was its lacklustre story. Hopefully, if Disney does decide to bring back Indiana Jones, it will have a decent script in mind first.

We previously heard rumors that the reason Ford held out on Star Wars at first was because a clause in his contract required him to do two more Indiana Jones films. Whether there was any truth to that is still unknown, but I doubt a new entry in the franchise will appear without any involvement from the actor. Is Pattinson a good choice to inherit the role, though? People tend to hold the Twilight series against him, but the actor is quite talented – as anyone who has seen Cosmopolis or The Rover can attest. Still, I’d rather see Cooper take Indiana Jones on, if not a lesser known up-and-comer.
