Robert Pattinson is going to be a pretty big deal at the Cannes film festival this year. While Ryan Gosling might steal some of the spotlight away from him with his directorial debut Lost River, the Twilight star has two big movies premiering at the fest and both of them are shaping up to be very exciting. The films in question are David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars and David Michod’s The Rover, which is the one that I’m most looking forward to seeing.
Today, we have the first clip and a new poster from the film. While we’ve already seen a trailer, the footage shown in the clip gives us a good look at the relationship between Pattinson and co-star Guy Pearce’s characters. It also shows us some of the philosophical questions that The Rover might attempt to answer and paints a picture of how bleak things are for our two leads.
For those unfamiliar with The Rover (shame on you!), it’s set “ten years after the collapse of society” and takes place in a world where law and order is a thing of the past. Pattinson plays Rey, a man who is left for dead after being carjacked by a gang. Eventually, he comes across Pearce’s Eric, one of the gang members who’s been abandoned and wounded. Together, they join up in order to track down those who have wronged them.
In addition to the clip, Michod released a statement on what it was like working with Rob (yes, I just called him that), which you can read below:
“I met Rob once before I even knew I was going to film ‘The Rover.’ He is among the 400,000 people I met in Los Angeles when ‘Animal Kingdom’ came out there. (Laughing) I knew nothing about him, I hadn’t seen the Twilight movie – Still haven’t seen them, by the way. However, some of my friends had told me he was an interesting guy,” director David Michod told Premiere magazine (via Robert Pattinson 360). “I was impressed by his intelligence, his energy, but that day, I was especially struck by his face. I thought I was going to come face to face with one of those young trendy guys whose beauty is boring, but his mug is fascinating, totally unique. Then, when we began casting for the film, I saw a lot of actors, some very well-known, but Rob’s tests were magnificent and very moving. And what was important to me, he really wanted to do the film, you could see it.”
The Rover opens on June 20th. Check out the clip and poster below and let us know if you’re as excited for this one as we are.
