Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman is one of the strangest and most exciting films of the year, and though we’re still not quite sure what to expect, we now know when we can expect it. Fox Searchlight has assigned the dark comedy an October 17th, 2014 release date, which may give it a fighting chance on the awards circuit.
Birdman stars Michael Keaton as an actor famous for portraying an iconic superhero, who battles his ego and attempts to recover his family and career while struggling to mount a Broadway play. Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts will round out what looks to be a very strong supporting cast.
Personally, I’m enjoying Keaton’s little career resurgence that we’ve seen over the last couple of years, and this film sounds right up his alley. I think many people forget how comedic he can be and seeing him poke fun at his previous role as Batman should make for an entertaining character study.
Not only that, but Iñárritu is a great director, who received much praise for his past films Amores Perros, Babel and Biutiful, so I’m interested to see what he does with something that’s a bit outside his wheelhouse.
