Renee Zellweger Will Find The Whole Truth With Daniel Craig

Hollywood's obsession with John Grisham-style courtroom thrillers appears to have petered out over the past few years. The last legal drama I truly enjoyed was 2011's The Lincoln Lawyer, and I can't even name one cinematic entry in the subgenre that has emerged since then. So, it's about time someone put their mind to resuscitating the courtroom thriller. The Whole Truth, which will likely release next year, may be the first project I've seen that could have a real shot at breathing new life into the subenre, especially now that it's gained Oscar winner Renee Zellweger in a leading role.

Hollywood’s obsession with John Grisham-style courtroom thrillers appears to have petered out over the past few years. The last legal drama I truly enjoyed was 2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer, and I can’t even name one cinematic entry in the subgenre that has emerged since then. So, it’s about time someone put their mind to resuscitating the courtroom thriller. The Whole Truth, which will likely release next year, may be the first project I’ve seen that could have a real shot at breathing new life into the subenre, especially now that it’s gained Oscar winner Renee Zellweger in a leading role.

The plot of The Whole Truth is being kept under wraps for now, but Daniel Craig is expected to star as a district attorney. No details have been revealed about Zellweger’s role as of yet.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the project is that Frozen River helmer Courtney Hunt will be sitting behind the camera. Frozen River was a completely riveting watch and one of 2008’s best films, and that was in large part thanks to Hunt’s work both directing and penning the script (for which she earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination). Though Nicholas Kazan is handling writing duties this time around, that’s certainly not a bad thing, considering Kazan previously worked on the highly underrated thriller Fallen.

I’m also really looking forward to seeing Craig take on a role outside of the James Bond franchise. As good as he was in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, that iconic franchise has given the actor very little opportunity to push himself dramatically, so hopefully The Whole Truth will hand him some meatier material. As 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo reminded us, Craig is a tremendously talented actor, and it’s about time he got a chance to showcase those acting chops again.

We’ll keep you posted as more news about The Whole Truth emerges, but, based on who’s involved, are you already excited about this drama? Or will you have to learn more before passing judgment?
