In the wake of the recent revelation of two forthcoming spin-off films based on Venom and the Sinister Six, a new international trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been released.
While previous teasers and trailers tended to focus exclusively on villain Electro, this new look at the film seems to be capitalizing heavily on the movie’s broader roster of bad guys. It’s pretty well timed too, as the last couple of weeks have been a deluge of well-orchestrated leaks hinting at and revealing more villains for Spider-Man to contend with.
The new footage includes glimpses of the Rhino (who bears a lot more similarity to his Ultimate Marvel appearance, just like Electro) and the Green Goblin. If there was any doubt at all that the film is ostensibly one big set-up for the formation of the Sinister Six, it should be pretty thoroughly trounced by now.
That’s not all, though. We also get a peek at some classic Spider-Man superhero shenanigans as he humorously attempts to keep his identity a secret from Aunt May. The new dynamic between Pete and Gwen is interesting, too. It was a relationship that we never got in the Sam Raimi trilogy but some of this humor is the stuff that I enjoyed the most in the first Amazing Spider-Man (a movie that I found to be a little bit plodding and disappointing), so I’m enormously happy to see this same angle come back in sharper focus.
So, what’s the consensus so far? A lot of people’s thoughts on the film’s abundance of villains seem to range from the cautiously optimistic to the downright cynical. Obviously, a lot of the skepticism towards the film is a bit of rightful movie-PTSD stemming from the terrible mess that was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
Personally, I’m pretty excited for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Everything I’ve seen so far has exceeded my expectations for the sequel. I’m a huge Spidey fan (please tell me I’m not the only one who’s got Kraven’s Last Hunt in their top-5 comics of all time?) but I didn’t really care for The Amazing Spider-Man. So, the ease with which my confidence has been restored should say something.
Plus, Jamie Foxx as Electro might just be the downright funkiest casting choice of 2013. Am I right?
