I’ve made no great secret of my excitement for HBO’s upcoming crime series True Detective, which hits the premium cable channel early next year. Early glimpses of the eight-episode limited series have set the show up to arrive as a major television event, and the talent involved is unmistakable. Today, a minute-long teaser for True Detective, titled “Slow Boil,” hit the web. It certainly lives up to its name, promising an extremely dark case and searing suspense. You can check it out below:
This series is going to be something really special, with two extremely skilled actors (Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson), a stylish director (Sin Nombre‘s Cary Fukunaga) and carte blanche to unleash all sorts of twisted mayhem, courtesy of HBO.
True Detective tracks two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) as they repeatedly clash throughout a 17-year long manhunt for a prolific Louisiana serial killer. Trailers suggest that the eerie Louisiana backdrop, as captured by Fukunaga, will be just as much of a character as the detectives.
HBO released an official plot synopsis for the show last month, which provides further insight into the show’s twisted, atmospheric world:
True Detective stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a killer, ranging from the original investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 to the reopening of the case in 2012. Michelle Monaghan also stars as Hart’s wife, Maggie, who struggles to keep her family together as the men in her life become locked in a cycle of violence and obsession.
The series will take an anthology approach to storytelling (think a moodier, more brutally realistic version of American Horror Story), following different characters and time periods in the likely event that there are subsequent installments.
The show also stars Kevin Dunne, Alexandra Daddario, Tory Kittles, Michael Potts and Elizabeth Reaser.
