Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the PlayStation 4 sold through over 1 million units in the United States and Canada during the first 24 hours after its launch on November 15th.

For some perspective on just how impressive these PlayStation 4 numbers are, Sony’s PS3 and the mighty Nintendo Wii sold 197K units and 476K units respectively in US sales during their first two weeks on sale. This also means that after a single day in one region PS4 sales now stand at approximately 25% of the number of Wii U consoles that Nintendo has shipped worldwide life-to-date (3.91 million units as of the end of September 2013).

SCE President and Group CEO Andrew House commented on the successful launch, saying:

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal. Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Microsoft is set to release their next-gen console this Friday, November 22, 3013. It will be interesting to see how sales of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 compare once both systems are out on the market.
