Is it too early to bring you your bummer of the day? If so, I’m sorry to say that Spike Jonze’s upcoming computer love story, Her, has been pushed from November 20th to a limited release on December 18th, with a wide release not coming until January 10th.
While a month really isn’t all that long, this is a film that many, myself included, have been very excited about since it was first announced. Once the excellent trailer premiered last week, excitement grew even more.
For those who don’t know, the film tells the story of Theodore, a lonely writer who purchases a new computer with a top-of-the-line operating system that is designed to cater to every want and need of its user. To Theodore’s surprise, he begins to develop romantic feelings for his operating system.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you should definitely check it out. It gives a solid look at the plot and a good bit of information about Joaquin Phoenix’s Theodore. For as eccentric as Phoenix can be, he’s still one of the top actors working today, and he looks to be just about perfect as the sort of man who could fall in love with a computer.
Plus, if you take nothing else from the trailer, it’ll make you wish you could replace Microsoft Sam with Scarlett Johansson. Heck, if that was the case, there’s a chance I’d fall in love with my operating system as well.
The one plus to the film’s new date is its limited release speaks to its quality. That date is a prime one for attracting awards voters, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if someone in the cast, especially Phoenix, snagged a nomination out of Her.
What do you think of this new date for Her? Do you think it has any awards potential? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
