Gameplay footage of Team Bondi’s next-gen title, Whore of the Orient, has been leaked to the Internet, providing us with what might be our only glimpse of the possibly canceled project.
According to the almost unnoticeable watermark on the video, the leaked Whore of the Orient footage was acquired and then distributed by the UK-based website VideoGamer. There is no context for the gameplay footage (which consists entirely of the unnamed main character engaging in combat and firefights within the title’s 1936 Shanghai, China setting), so it is impossible to gauge how it fits within the larger context of the game’s plot. Without knowing any background for the video, the only thing we can say is that the (obviously) very early gameplay footage has a clear Sleeping Dogs vibe to it — as the combat and cover mechanics are extremly similar.
Announced as a next-gen console and PC game in August of 2012, the current state of Team Bondi’s Whore of the Orient is shrouded in mystery. Team Bondi was shut down in 2011, and is thought to have been purchased by the Australian production firm Kennedy Miller Mitchell (KMM) later that same year. Warner Bros. was rumored to have dropped the open world title in late 2012, and the development team was allegedly laid off earlier this year. The current speculation is that KMM is seeking another publisher for the project, but that has not been confirmed.
We will keep an eye out for any official updates on Whore of the Orient, and let you know if anything pops up. In the meantime, look above the huge watermark in the video below to check out the upper half of the title’s leaked gameplay footage. This may be the last you ever see of this game.
