The nominations for the 2013 Primetime Emmys were announced this morning without that many surprises to be found. In fact, as you look down the list, you’ll see several of the usual suspects that we’ve come to expect.
For Best Drama Series, we once again find Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, and Homeland, all nominees last year in the same category. The only new addition is actually a show that has made a bit of history. House of Cards has become the first show to be nominated in the category that was released exclusively online (Netflix).
For Best Comedy Series, Modern Family, Veep, The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, and Girls are once again up for the award after being nominated last year as well. Louie rounds out the category as the sixth nominee.
Overall, American Horror Story nabbed the most nominations with 17, including Best Miniseries and Lead Actress in a Miniseries (Jessica Lange), while Game of Thrones follows with 16, including Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama (Peter Dinklage), and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama (Emilia Clarke).
Personally, I don’t watch that many TV shows anymore, but with some of the great shows that I do watch having been nominated, it’s enough to make me want to root for them. In particular, I’ll be cheering for Game of Thrones to take top honors, something I’ve been waiting for to happen for the past couple of years, only to see it defeated by Homeland and Mad Men. Could this finally be the year it comes out on top?
As for its other nominations, I’m not too sure of its chances in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories. Dinklage has already won for his outstanding performance as Tyrion Lannister, so I don’t think they’ll be giving it to him again this soon, especially with his character not getting nearly as much screentime as he has in the past. Clarke does a good job as Daenerys Targaryen, but she has to go up against the powerhouse known as Maggie Smith – in addition to other talented actresses. Where it does seem to have a good chance is in Outstanding Guest Actress (Diana Rigg) and Best Writing (D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, “The Rains of Castamere”).
I’m rather surprised that American Horror Story got as many nominations as it did, particularly because this season was nowhere near as good as the first, but I guess there must have been enough people who liked it. As to its chances though, I wouldn’t hold my breath for it to take many of its categories.
As for the Comedy nominees, I wish I could say more, but I don’t watch any of those shows. However, it’s a safe bet that Modern Family will continue its streak, having won the category for the last three years in a row.
There’s still plenty of time left to speculate as to who the winners will be as the 2013 Emmys won’t air until Sunday, September 22nd. In the meantime, check out the nominees for all major categories below.
