At this point it’s no secret that the future of the DC universe is up in the air. For now, the only certainty is that Man Of Steel is coming to theaters on June 14th. In terms of the plans after that, it seems like Warner Bros. is going to wait and make sure Zack Snyder’s Superman film is a success before committing to any further ventures into DC’s comic lore.
With the future of Justice League contingent on Man Of Steel‘s success, it’s a possibility that a broader universe will be alluded to, as opposed to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, which made no mention of any other heroes possibly residing in that universe.
Nolan himself didn’t deny a Batman cameo in the Superman film he’s producing, but he also didn’t confirm it. And this came in the midst of the Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman rumor surge, so for the most part, it has seemed safe to discount any possibility of seeing a hero other than Superman on June 14th. Until today.
In a recent interview, Snyder revealed an Easter Egg from the film that hints at the possibility of something much bigger. Before you read on, know Snyder’s quote does have a bit of a spoiler.
Still here? Okay, cool. Check out Snyder’s quote below.
“The Wayne Enterprises logo is on a satellite that Zod destroys.”
One small sentence, talking about a small logo that probably will be hard to see in real time, but it may mean a lot more than that. The fact that a Wayne Enterprises logo shows up anywhere in the movie means this film isn’t in its own self-contained universe. Batman exists in the world Snyder has created, meaning the door is open to the Caped Crusader showing up.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Batman will have a role in Man Of Steel, or even show up at all, but does this mean Man Of Steel 2 will feature a cross-over with the two characters? Or perhaps it means Justice League isn’t as far off as it may seem.
There still is the possibility of a post-credits cameo by Batman, but that would mean Warner Bros. has found their Bruce Wayne and is ready to commit to him, even without concrete plans for either a Batman reboot or Justice League announced. I’d find that fairly hard to believe, but then again, the attempts at setting up a DC cinematic universe haven’t been the most logical so far.
There’s also the chance that the logo on the satellite is nothing more than a logo on a satellite. A cool little treat for fans who actual care, but of utter insignificance past that. Yes, that is a very realistic possibility, but it isn’t a very fun one.
