Joe Swanberg’s rom-com Drinking Buddies brings to the big screen a couple of items most likely shared on more than one bucket list. Firstly, there’s holding down a job wherein you are actively encouraged to drink at work. Secondly, there’s winning the affections of both Olivia Wilde and Anna Kendrick. What else is there as yet unrevealed by the official synopsis?! With the film’s summer opening approaching, distributor Magnolia Pictures have released a new poster and a couple of images. The lucky chap at the centre of the film’s bucket-list plottings is brewery employee, Luke (New Girl‘s Jake Johnson.) Luke spends his days at work flirting and getting tanked with fellow worker, Kate (Olivia Wilde.) Chemistry between the two froths up but leads nowhere. They’ve both already got partners. Kate is involved with Chris (Ron Livingston) and Luke is in a serious relationship with Jill (Anna Kendrick.) Despite their respective other halves, the flirtatious duo end up spending a weekend away together. Will Luke favour his current girlfriend, Jill, and appease her desire to marry? Or will he think sod it and hook up with Kate? Sounds like a win-win situation to us.
Debuting at SXSW earlier this year, the film has garnered a gamut of positive reviews. Most of which singled out director Swanberg’s shift into a film world populated by a glittery cast, still very much capable of improvising. Swanberg started his humble mumblecore beginnings with films such as Hannah Takes The Stairs and Kissing On The Mouth. For his latest effort, he’s bagged a new brand of actors and still held onto his improvisatory methods. Most of the film, while based on his script, was improvised by the four leads.
Drinking Buddies hits VOD on July 25th, and lands in theatres on August 23rd.
